Lindsay's List: October 2024
Share

I’m currently writing this newsletter from Mexico City, where I’m on my first real vacation with Claire in almost three (!!!) whole years. After a very busy and fun — albeit draining — October, I couldn’t be more excited to be exploring a new city that’s been on my bucket list for a very long time with someone I love. While my itinerary is pretty solidified, please don’t hesitate to reach out if there are any spots in CDMX that I absolutely can’t miss!

This past month also marked one whole year of living in Brooklyn. The past year in New York has been such a extraordinary experience for me and it’s hard not to feel overly gushy and sentimental about the whole thing. As most of you probably know, I’ve wanted to live in New York for as long as I can remember (and spent every free moment I had in high school gallivanting around the city), so it still feels kind of surreal to actually have this dream be realized.

While I knew the city itself would be incredible, the community I’ve built and friends I’ve made this past year have been the most special addition to my life. I’m so grateful to not only be a New Yorker, but also to share my life with so many people who make my life significantly more vibrant, fun and interesting — not to mention y’all! I know I say this like every month, but I truly can’t thank you enough for being here and reading Lindsay’s List.

And with that, here are my favorites and flops for October:

Upgrade to paid

The Favorites:

  • Brooklinen Classic Percale Duvet Set

Cost: $161.84 (normally priced at $224 but Brooklinen almost always offers 15% off)

My new Brooklinen duvet cover and pillowcases in Tandem Stripe in Moss

I’ve been desperately needing a new duvet situation after Winston (my cat) accidentally tore through our old Buffy duvet cover. Thanks to a recommendation from my friend Liz, we decided to go with this Brooklinen duvet set with super cute moss green stripes — this colorway is limited edition, though! I highly recommend giving the set a wash before using it for an even softer feel on first use. Ever since switching over to this duvet set, our bed has been giving major fancy hotel vibes.

  • The Sunday Stack’s Chili

    Cost: Varies depending on ingredients

The perfect meal: chili and cornbread with all the fixings

It’s officially chili season and I couldn’t be happier about it. I spent a whole Saturday this month with Liz cooking this chili recipe from one of my favorite food content creators and have been dreaming about it ever since I finished my last serving of leftovers (and I’m notorious for letting leftovers go to waste!). We used turkey instead of beef and swapped out a pound of the ground beef for two cans of kidney beans. Words truly can’t describe how delicious this was, especially with all the accoutrements, but at the bare minimum, topping off your chili with sour cream, hand-grated cheddar and sour cream is a must.

  • Hand-Printed Linocut Matches Vest from Jasmine Vine Designs

Location: BQ Flea under the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway along Meeker Ave in between Union and Lorimer Aves in Williamsburg

Transportation: Metropolitan Av/Lorimer St G/L or B48 Bus

    Cost: $65

Vest from Jasmine Vine Designs with hand-printed linocut matches on it

Spoiler alert: the BQ Flea is actually on my flops list for this month, but Jasmine Vine’s stall was literally the silver lining of the whole market. After looking through racks of stupidly expensive vintage clothing and actual junk with my friends, we came across this vendor that drew us in with her hand-printed linocut clothing. I copped this Wrangler denim vest, which fits perfectly, that’s adorned with matches, matchboxes and also has a moth drawn to the flame on the back. Based on what I’ve seen on her Instagram, she makes new creations each weekend so it’s worth to check out the flea market just for her stuff. I mean, who doesn’t want a one-of-a-kind piece of clothing from a flea market in Brooklyn?

  • Enchiladas Suizas at Kellogg’s Diner

Location: 518 Metropolitan Ave in Williamsburg

Transportation: Metropolitan Av/Lorimer St G/L or B24/Q54/Q59 Buses

    Cost: $20

An awful picture of some excellent enchiladas

Kellogg’s Diner might just be the most hyped restaurant in New York right now, and the hype is for a good reason. The nearly century-old diner just reopened as a much trendier spot with a ton of Tex-Mex influence, hence the enchiladas. Good Tex-Mex food isn’t the easiest to find in New York, so I was truly impressed by these enchiladas. They come stuffed with shredded chicken and are doused in one of the most punchy, flavorful tomatillo-based enchilada sauces I’ve ever had. My only complaint about this dish is that I wish it came with a third enchilada because I was left wanting more once I finished this dish.

  • High Rise Wide-Leg Leopard Jeans from GAP Factory

Cost: $50.39 (bought on sale; normally priced at $89.99)

I literally can't stop wearing these pants

Sadly these jeans are now sold out, but I’ve worn them so much this month that it would feel wrong to not include them on the October list. While I wouldn’t necessarily classify these as jeans, they are a perfect pair of pants: comfortable with a little stretch, but still structured and wide legged, and I love how they can be dressed up or down. Also, everyone knows that leopard print is basically considered a neutral so these pants go well with so much. Gap Factory still has some other colors/prints of these pants available, but I’ve also found some similar pairs of pants on Lisa Says Gah! and ASOS in case you just need your own pair in leopard.

  • “We Live in Time”

Cost: $18 (for one weekend ticket at Williamsburg Cinemas)

I rarely go to the movies, but when I do it tends to be to see an A24 movie that I end up loving and makes me cry. “We Live in Time” is no exception to this. It’s hard to summarize without giving too much away, but the movie follows the journey of two people that meet in a very unexpected way, fall in love and eventually have to come to terms with the fact that their relationship is on borrowed time. It’s funny, heart wrenching and I think every single person that was in the theater also left crying. Be sure to bring tissues to this one…

    The Flops:

  • Missing the Mets: There’s not much to say here other than RIP to the Mets. The worst part isn’t even that the Mets lost, it’s that the Dodgers (🤮) won the World Series.

  • A flea market flop: Other than the one vendor I mentioned above, the BQ Flea was… a bust. Unless you’re looking for overpriced crap or vintage clothing that you could get for half the price at Beacon’s Closet, I’d recommend skipping this market unless you specifically go for Jasmine Vine Designs.

  • Many mid meals: One of my least favorite things in life is paying a lot of money for a mid meal. Unfortunately, I just wasn’t impressed with most of the places that I ate out this month so if you have any can’t miss restaurant recommendations in NYC right now, I’m all ears.

That’s all for now, folks! Thanks for reading and I’ll be back next month with my favorites and flops for November.

Xoxo, Linds

Paid subscribers can keep reading below for access to my monthly playlist and a few more things I loved this month. Also, rumor has it that Substack is comping a month of paid subscriptions until 11/4. I’m working on a mega one-year-in-New-York Lindsay’s List that will feature all all-time favorite spots in NYC from the past year, which will only be available to paid subscribers (so it’s probably a good idea to get that comped subscription while you can 😉).
